Summer Practicum

Intensive three-week family therapy to improve skills in family therapy, increase knowledge base, and receive supervision that can be applied to MFT state licensure requirements. Clinical cases provided.

Those who cannot participate in an ongoing one- or two-year pro gram can take advantage of a highly-concentrated version of the Extern Program, which is offered each summer for three weeks during June. A summer practicum includes approximately 100 hours of didactic, individual, and group clinical training experience. It is specifically designed for clinicians who want to improve their skills in brief family therapy.

A four-to six-person group meets with an AAMFT-approved supervisor. Hands-on skills are learned through one-way mirror and videotape supervision, case presentation, and observation of family sessions. All participants attend a family topics seminar where faculty cover clinical theory, family therapy issues, and therapeutic technique. Those with minimal clinical experience may apply for two available positions as participant observers in which family sessions of the practicum trainees are observed through a one-way mirror. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion. Information on housing is available.
