To improve skills in family therapy, increase knowledge base, and receive supervision that can be applied to state licensure requirements - for beginning, intermediate or advanced clinicians. Intensive training for clinicians in the theory and practice of family therapy. Clinical cases provided.
This program is designed for clinicians who desire ongoing supervision in a comprehensive full-day format. Goals include achieving competency in assessing and changing the family system, treatment planning, and expanding the therapist’s style. Two applied clinical courses are offered. Externs are organized in groups of six trainees with one supervisor and receive one-way mirror and/or videotape supervision during an eight-hour day group which meets once a week for 20 weeks from October to April.
Clinical cases are provided, or clinicians may bring in their own cases and retain client fees. Clinical work is conducted in Philadelphia. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the program. A master’s, doctoral, or medical degree in a field appropriate to clinical work with families and/or couples is required. A full-day one year Extern program may be conducted at any agency site willing to sponsor the program. Cases are provided by the sponsoring agency; courses are offered at our training site in Philadelphia.
Those applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree or with minimal clinical experience may apple for a participant-observer position. After completing this sequence, trainees wanting to become family therapists and who meet acceptance criteria will receive consideration for application to the Extern Program.
