Couples and Couple Therapy

This 45-hour course is designed to provide the marriage and family clinician an appreciation of the current research, theory and practice literature related to couple development, couple interaction and couple intervention. It is comprised of six modules, beginning with a wide-angle view of normative trends in coupling and marriage, and then moves to a close-up focus on couple interaction, prevention and enhancement programs, couples assessment and clinical approaches to treatment. Special challenges, such as treating same sex couples and heterosexual co-habiting couples are also examined. $700.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Identify the influence of socio-cultural factors and gender-based roles on the developing couple.
  2. Recognize reciprocal influences between individual adult development, stages of the family life cycle and couple functioning.
  3. Identify important relationship dimensions for couples assessment.
